Which multi cap fund is best right now?

Answer refreshed with data updated · research, not investment advice

There is no permanent answer, but there is a current one, and the live leaderboard below is it: every multi cap fund ranked by the FundLens Smart Score — returns, risk-adjusted quality (Sharpe, Sortino, alpha, volatility) and cost, each scored as a percentile against multi cap peers only and recomputed every time our AMFI data refreshes. Nothing on this page is hand-picked.

Multi cap is diversification by rule: SEBI requires these funds to hold at least 25% each in large, mid and small caps at all times. That guaranteed floor of mid and small cap exposure is the key difference from a flexi cap fund, where the manager is free to park everything in large caps if they choose — so a multi cap gives you dependable all-market coverage in a single fund, which is why many investors use one as their core equity holding.

The flip side of that mandate is the caveat: the enforced 25% small and mid cap floor makes a multi cap structurally bumpier than a typical flexi cap, even in a falling market when the manager cannot retreat fully to large caps. Judge it on risk-adjusted returns over three to five years rather than one strong year, and if you already hold separate large-, mid- or small-cap funds, check how much a multi cap would overlap before adding it. This is research, not investment advice.
